AUSTRIA-TRATTENBACH
Trattenbach is my Austrian heart affair. I have come to love the accommodation at the Almbauer Morgenbesser farm. The apartments are cozy, well-equipped, and reasonably priced per night. The farm is the last building at the end of the winding road up the hills and has a beautiful view of the valley.
There are a few benches along the road behind the farm, which are a pleasant place to stop. My favorite time for a nap was in the afternoon before sunset. When the cows are grazing, you have the accompaniment of their tinkling bells. This year, I also enjoyed all the colors of autumn, and it was perfect.
Tips for trips in the area
Hike to Sonnwedstein
The hiking trail to the summit starts directly from the farm. On the way, don't miss the viewpoint with the Erzkogel cross, which you will pass on the left side. There are beautiful views from there. You can rest on Sonnwedstein, and during the season, there is usually a refreshment stand open. At the top, there is a chapel and a lookout towards the valley on the other side of the hill. You can return back the same way, or take a circuitous route along the winding green hiking trail to the valley on the other side of the hill, and then return via the blue trail back to the farm.
The cog railway in Puchberg am Schneeberg
We got this great tip for a trip from our friends. Unfortunately, we had bad luck the first time we went because we arrived in April, a week before the cog railway season opened. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant trip. We walked around Puchberg (about a 30-minute drive from Trattenbach) and soaked our feet in a mountain stream.
The second time we did better and the cog railway was finally open. You can find information about ticket prices and timetables here. There are several stops along the way, and at one of them, you can stop for freshly baked buns. The stand is right at the station, and you don't have to worry, the train will wait for you. :)
At the top, you can choose from several hiking trails, and there is even a playground for children. Next to the station, there is a pub where we took shelter from the wind after the ascent, replenished our energy, and waited for the next train back down. We regretted a little that we had bought a return ticket without thinking because it was a beautiful day and we could have easily walked down.
Wexl Trails
This mountain bike park with singletrack trails is only a 20-minute drive from the farm. The center offers all services including bike rentals, which can be reserved in advance here.
The trails in the park are well-marked, maintained, and there is also a great section for kids with a practice area. In the warmer months, the lake in the upper part of the park must be a pleasant spot. On the way back to Trettenbach, you can stop for coffee at a stylish café with a shop right by the road.
Natural Park Hohe Wand
The Hohe Wand park is located on a massive plateau where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area and watch paragliders launching off the summit into the valley. The park offers many hiking and mountaineering trails.
Mariazell
If it's on your way, you can stop on your way home in the beautiful town of Mariazell, which is known as a pilgrimage site. A few minutes' drive from there is Lake Eurlaufsee, and a walk around it is worth it.
